After three days of rain caused by a strong south Easter the sky’s cleared in time for shooting, although a little warm. On the day there were two competitions on offer. The first the annual handicap club championship for members and second an open event including our guests.
For the competition a wider range of targets than normal were set over four stands. These ranged in difficulty from novice to expert. The last stand in front of club house seemed to cause participants the most problems in spite of the fact that it consisted of a rather pedestrian rabbit crossing from right to left at 20yds and a lazy left to right normal at 25yds. Both targets got the better of most shots in either the singles or the doubles.
Members and guests rose to the occasion and scores were above average. For the first time we were joined by Lourens Akkerman, Simon Smith and Nick Carole for Elgin Sporting Clays. This is a new club located near the Paul Cluver Wine Estate in Grabouw catering for corporate and member shoots. They are open almost every Saturday and GGC members are welcome.
After a successful mornings shooting in windless conditions 16 members and quests repaired to the Oak and Vigne for lunch. As it was the final shoot of the year the Club paid for lunch thereafter members returned to the range at 15h00 of a short final session in windy conditions.
The shooting was worthy of a final with most competitors putting in memorable performances. On completion members held an informal prize giving on the range. The chairman took this opportunity thank the members and trappers for their contributions in making this a successful year. Trappers were presented with a Christmas hamper and 13th check. On the competition front John Reader (53) won the 2014 Handy Cap Club Championship for a second year in a row with James Sedgwick/ Jacques Bourdin (47) runners up. The open event was tied by R.W. Erwee and D.Legg (44). Prizes were also awarded to highest sporting and trap in both events. I have attached the score sheet for your records plus the monthly competition score card. Please note that it is club policy if you are a winner in the open event you cannot also win in the Handicap. This is to prevent the Holtzhausen Syndrome. Next event 31 Jan 2014.
