Recently I was looking at a title deed granted in 1839 for a local farm. What struck me from the outset was Lord Napiers title in bold letters at the top.
HIS EXCELLENCY MAJOR GENERAL SIR GEORGE THOMAS NAPIER, KNIGHT COMMANDER OF THE MOST HONORABLE ORDER OF BATH, GOVERNOR AND COMMANDER IN HER MAJESTY’S CASTLE, TOWN AND SETTLEMENT OF THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE, IN SOUTH AND AFRICA AND OF TERRITORIES AND DEPENDENCIES THEROF, AND ORDINARY, AND VICE ADMIRAL OF THE SAME, COMMANDING THE FORCES.
IN THE NAME OF HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN VICTORIA, BY THE GRACE OF GOD, OF THE UNITED KINGDOM GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND, QUEEN, DEFENDER OF THE FAITH.
